Taking part
Each question is separate, because "open" and "free" mean different things here. A yes always means open or free to someone who is not a member.
- Can anyone read the specifications for free?
- ◐PartlyA public version (3.0.0) of the KNX Specifications is listed at EUR 0.00 in the MyKNX shop; members get the latest version (v3.0.3) in their MyKNX account. my.knx.org, checked 30 Oct 2026
- Can anyone take part in the community?
- ◐PartlyKNX Partners are installers and integrators trained in KNX courses: more than 75,000 in over 190 countries. Specification work and development tools are for members. knx.org, checked 30 Oct 2026
- Can an individual take part for free?
- ◐PartlyA MyKNX account is free and gives the public specifications; membership itself is for companies, by number of staff. support.knx.org, checked 30 Oct 2026
- Can an organization join for free?
- ✕NoThe cheapest class, Interested Party, costs EUR 1,000 a year for fewer than 100 staff and EUR 2,000 above; KNX also runs a startup program for companies that cannot afford full membership yet. support.knx.org, checked 30 Oct 2026
- Are technical working groups open to non-members?
- ?UnknownWe found no public statement on who can join KNX Association's working groups.
- Can non-members take part in interoperability testing?
- ?UnknownAccredited test labs check interworking as part of certification; we found no public interoperability events open to non-members.
- Can a non-member certify a product?
- ✕NoCertification programs are listed as a member benefit; products are tested at one of 16 KNX accredited test labs, which check conformity and interoperability, KNX Secure and the KNX media. knx.org, checked 30 Oct 2026
- Does it maintain or host open-source implementations?
- ✓YesKNX Association had Cascoda implement an open-source KNX IoT Point API stack in C, under Apache-2.0. knx.org, checked 30 Oct 2026

Certification and interoperability

Open-source implementations
OT Fabric's notesWhat stands out
On the IP side KNX has an unusually strong open field: four mature, independent stacks, Calimero, knxd, xknx and KNXUltimate, carry KNXnet/IP into Home Assistant, openHAB, Node-RED and many gateways, and the public specification is free with a MyKNX account.
Devices are a different story. Certification and a manufacturer code need membership, which sets the open device stacks, thelsing's knx and its OpenKNX fork, apart from certified commercial stacks such as TAPKO's; open libraries mostly reach the bus through certified IP interfaces and routers.
go-knx implements KNXnet/IP and KNX Secure from public sources, has no manufacturer code of its own, is not KNX certified and makes no conformance claim; it uses the word KNX descriptively, as a registered trademark of KNX Association cvba.

KNX over KNXnet/IP: frames, cEMI and 209 datapoint subtypes, discovery, tunnelling over UDP and TCP, routing, group communication, device management, busmonitor and a KNXnet/IP server with virtual devices, with KNX IP Secure, KNX Data Secure and ETS keyrings. Pure Go, no dependencies, no cgo.

Passive by default.
Four independent KNX implementations in containers behind one contract: Calimero server and tools, knxd, xknx and KNXUltimate, with a raw probe for negative tests, across tunnelling, routing, datapoint types, TCP, device management and KNX Secure.
